This time of year in Calgary the temperatures drop fast and so do the leaves. We have a very brief window of time between the leaves landing in our eaves, and being frozen into that critical space. If we get an early snow fall, which is highly likely, leaves become trapped into the gutters where they reside until a good thaw or worse, the spring. These clogged eaves places our homes at real risk for damage.
Why Clean Your Eaves?
First of all, every home has eaves for a good reason. If you are doubting the importance of cleaning them, this is a good fact to remember. Their function is critical in protecting your home from water related damages. If you have covered or guarded eaves, which many homes now do, cleaning is easier but still must be done.
One of the main causes of basement flooding is eaves that are not working properly; clogged or not pointed away from the home. The critical function for eaves is moving water coming off the roof, from rain or snow melt, away from a home’s foundation. Dumping large amount of water along the foundation line, no matter how well constructed your home is, increases the risk that water will eventually find its way into your basement. Once that happens you have an entirely new problem that is far more costly than having your eaves cleaned.
Moisture trapped between the roof and the eaves can cause ice damming. This can severely damage your roof. Ice damming is build up of ice resulting from freezing and thawing of the moisture trapped under the shingles. This can go undetected until there is a real problem.
Ideally your eaves should be cleaned twice per year; in the fall and spring. If once is all you can manage, then do it in the fall as this is when the largest build up of leaves and debris will happen.
Do It Yourself or Not?
In my opinion, the answer to that is easy…absolutely not! Most homeowners do not have the proper equipment to reach all of the eaves surrounding their homes. Reaching or placing yourself in dangerous positions on the roof to get at those “hard to reach spots” increase the risk of injury. The stats behind this are compelling. This is one of those jobs that you embark on thinking it won’t take much time at all when in reality, for an ill equipped homeowner, it can easily chew up an entire day. Wouldn’t you rather be doing something else with your free time?
Support your local Calgary economy and hire a pro to tackle the job. It is a low cost task to contract out so head to Who To Call and order up a professional to help out. We have pros on demand that can be sent to your home immediately
Like many home maintenance tasks, there is no immediate reward for tackling this to do but so important to get it done to prevent water damage to your home. A big part of protecting your home comes from the work the eaves do. If we do our part and maintain them, they will do their job in protecting our home.
