Chemical Free Grass Maintenance

A natural lawn is a healthy lawn, and so is the family that nurtures it. Pets and children are not known to stay out of the dirt, and grass and so we want to make our yards safe for play and healthier overall.

Chemicals are not necessarily the best option for your lawn care, and they certainly are not the best option for your backyard adventurers. Chemical lawn care has been known to cause rashes and respiratory issues in kids, and bladder cancer in pups – all for what?

Many associate organic with time consuming but that really is not the case.  In reality, chemicals are simply not enough to keep our lawns as healthy as they should be, so if you don’t want to make the switch for your health reasons, make it so your lawn will be the best it can be.

Here are a number of things you can do to maintain your Calgary grass without chemicals:

watering lawn

Train your grass to grow deep roots

It’s been a very dry Spring here in Calgary so the temptation is to water often to green up our lawns.  When you water your grass a little bit every other day you are actually training your grass to grow shallow roots to soak up as much as the surface water as possible. This will not make for a healthy law.

Train your grass to grow deep roots by watering it heavily no more than once a week. This heavy watering should soak a few inches deep so that the grass roots will begin to grow down to soak up more if it, strengthening it from the root up and giving it all the water it needs.

Keep your grass longer (cut less, mow often)

Cut your grass with a shallower blade. You should never be cutting off more than 1/3 of the plant at once as it will make the grass more susceptible to burning and can dry out the soil faster. Raise the blade in your lawn mower and cut the lawn more often to maintain that healthy length needed for a healthy green lawn without chemicals.  Here is more good news – leave the grass clippings behind to provide the turf grass with more nutrients and slow the growth of weeds.

Aerate your lawn every year

Aerating your lawn allows for nutrients, water, and air to reach deeper into the soil creating an healthy growing environment below the surface. There are many tools and machines available to aerate your lawn yourself, however, hiring a professional can save you time and ensure that it is done evenly and safely. Post your aerating and lawn maintenance project on the who to call website to be connected with a professional right away.

Rake (reduce thatch)

Raking your lawn before the first snow fall will help reduce thatch build up and will make for an easier spring for your lawn. While some dead leaves are great for fertilization, decomposition in excess can make it difficult for your grass to grow. Raking debris and dead foliage from your yard will not only create a safe play space but will also aid in the growth of lush green grass without chemicals.

Go organic

Sometimes your yard may need a bit of help, whether it is from fertilizer or weed killer. There are a number organic, even homemade products out there that will get you the green lawn you dream of without putting your family, both 2 and 4 legged, at risk.  Vinegar has been proven to kill weeds and let’s not forget the old fashioned way….actually digging them out of the ground!

Chemical free lawn care also keeps the ‘good pests’ around to fend off the bad ones and will also bring some beautiful new friends to your yard, such as dragon flies, ladybugs, and a variety of birds.

If you are getting started with your landscaping project or need help with yard maintenance we have a variety of designers and landscapers available on Who To Call  waiting to share their expertise on healthy lawn care.   Many companies are happy to work chemical free and have great insight how to do so.
