Need A New Roof? Think Beyond Asphalt Shingles

Snow is almost gone in Calgary and if you are in the market for a new roof-now is the time to think about executing on the project.  Before you consider the most common type of roof-asphalt shingles…think again.  Do some research on the new choices in roofing material. You will be amazed at what is out there.

So…where to begin to find the roofer you want to work with and then choose the product that you want to use?  Start with choosing the product as some roofing companies do specialize. There are many factors to consider and cost is always one of them as well as where we live – Calgary. Our harsh climate has to play a role in the decision as well as what style of home you have.

Roofing material choices include asphalt (most common), metal roofing, concrete or clay tiles, and the new very popular recycled rubber roofing as well as wood shakes. The need to get the proper warranty goes without saying.

Asphalt shingles are the most common and economical roofing material. There are a dozen of reasons to love asphalt shingles, including the fact that they come in many shapes, styles, and colors, are generally resistant to hail and other harsh weather, and can be designed to meet lots of different styles of homes. Asphalt shingles are not just the lowest-cost roofing material around, but can last up to 40 years (aggressive), which is probably the biggest reason that roughly 80% of all new homes in Calgary use them.

Clay Now concrete tiles have been around a long time. Concrete roofing (it’s a blend as 100% concrete would be too heavy) can give your home a wonderful look, and last nearly forever, but that durability comes with a price. It is not unusual for concrete tiles to cost several times more than an asphalt roof would. In fact, you might spend more than you would on asphalt roof just to have your concrete tiles maintained. Not all roofers work with this type of tile although we did see quite a bit of it at the Calgary Home and Garden Show.

Metal roofing can give your home a very distinctive look. After visiting with Interlock Roofing we saw that a metal roof can take on the look of slate, asphalt shingles, slate or tile.  It comes at a higher cost (about twice that of asphalt) but can come with up to a 50 year warranty.  A great selling feature for your home.

Rubber roofing (made from recycled material) is becoming more popular every year. Most roofing companies we came across offered this as an alternative to asphalt shingles.  It installs easily, can be adjusted to fit all kinds of different styles, is cost effective (although still more than asphalt), and very resistant to damage.

If you live in a very windy area you have the choice of interlocking rubber roof tiles.

One word of caution – we did hear that there is a short term “rubber smell” with installing this type of roof.

Wood shakes are not nearly as popular as they used to be.  They have a wonderful rugged look which suits some older homes but the increased durability of asphalt has made wood shakes something that most homeowners avoid.   The cost of wood shakes can be double that of asphalt and they do not last nearly as long….not a fan of the greenery growing from them after they have been left on a roof past their prime either.
