Boost Your Home’s Curb Appeal With These Exterior Makeover Tips

Renew your front door

Your front door acts as the face of your home and gives an overall impression of the entire house. So why not spruce it up and give it some character. To make your entrance warm and inviting, try adding a fresh coat of paint on the door.  Adding some colour to your door can make it pop, black or red are popular choices. However, refreshing the colour that is already on there will brighten it up and make it look like new again.

Behr and Benjamin Moore both offer exterior paints that are reasonably priced and environmentally safe with no VOC’s.

Repaint trim & shutters

The colour on your trim and shutters often weathers and fades throughout time. Giving them a refresher will compliment your home’s exterior. Plus you can always try a new colour and see what you think, as they are made to accent your home and add a pop of colour to its colour scheme.

Refresh Siding

The siding of your home goes through a lot of wear and tear; especially with the moody weather we have here in Calgary. The rain and snow, even the sun, can discolour your siding and make your home look old and dreary. Try power washing your siding to get rid of any stains or build up dirt and grim that has built up. If you have stucco siding even consider adding a layer of paint to spruce it up.

Replenish outside hardware

This can include:

  • House numbers
  • Locks and door knobs
  • Mail box
  • Lighting

Many of these can become either outdated or weathered and look dingy after a few years. Also adding updated lighting fixtures accents your yard and can illuminate any gardens, or pathways you may have. These are like the accessories to your home and they can add style and personality to its exterior.

Home Depot and Rona usually offer low priced but quality hardware accessories for your home.

Maintain your Garden

It is important to keep your gardens well groomed, this will liven up your yard and give it the perception that you spend the time to improve your yard (or pay someone to do so!). Things you can do to keep your gardens in tiptop shape are:

  • Trim away dead flowers/ plants/ branches
  • Take out all of the leaves
  • Add some coloured mulch
  • WEED!

If you don’t have any garden space, try adding planters! You can plant colourful flowers to go along with colour scheme of your home to add some colour, miniature trees and scrubs. This will give your home a more mature, finished look and you also have the option to move the planters around as you choose.

Symmetry!

Symmetry is pleasing to look at and is eye catching, giving your home an organized homey look. Things such as light fixtures, potted plants and other exterior accessories become pleasing accents when organized in a symmetrical form.

Groom your Lawn

Grooming your lawn is a simple yet necessary thing when maintaining your home. Make sure to keep it cut and trimmed regularly and keep it fertilized so weeds do not take over. Also if your lawn is looking thin and patchy try adding some sod, dirt or grass seed to make it grow thicker and healthier.

If you have gardens next to your lawn it is often a nice touch to border them with stonework, adding a separation and a polished look to your yard.

Add to your Deck/Patio

If you plan on entertaining or even spending time in your yard, investing in a quality, well-designed deck or patio is necessary! If you have a good deck already, make sure to pressure wash it and if it is wooden add a clear coat or stain. Adding light fixtures, patio furniture and potted plants will also boost its appeal.

Refurbish Driveway

Your driveway takes up a good portion of your home’s exterior and will bring down your homes ambiance if not cared for. Try applying a topcoat sealer, it is an easy and inexpensive way to freshen it up and make it look like new.
