6 Tough Questions to Ask Your Contractor

When hiring a contractor there are always burning questions we feel we should ask, but sometimes never do. It’s important to always feel confident when hiring someone to work on your home. Here are six questions that need be asked before starting a project of any size.

1. Experience and References?

You will want to know what your contractor has worked on in the past and to ask for references you can speak with about their experience. Don’t forget to check whotocall.ca for other reviews of the contractor.

2. Ask to see their license

Contractors must have a valid Contractors License to operate in the City of Calgary. Best to ask to see it, and verify it online, before beginning any large projects.

3. Written agreements

Ensure the project is well quoted and everything is in writing before you begin. This eliminates any opportunity for changes and additions that are out of scope. Make sure you get a copy for your records.

4. How will the project be tracked?

Oftentimes, projects get underway and the homeowner doesn’t know or understand what stage the contractor is at or what decisions need to be made. Ask your contractor if they have a project management tool they use or how they intend to keep you up to speed with their progress.

5. Check their insurance

Contractors carry liability insurance in the case of damage or injury. Ask to see this before signing any papers.

6. Ask about warranty

You will hope the work done meets or even exceeds your expectations. But what happens if it doesn’t? This is a tough question that needs to be asked!

When Alana moved to Calgary she quickly discovered it was an Olympic sport to find home service businesses that provided the quality service and advice she was looking for. This experience inspired Alana’s solution: Who To Call.
